The book is an image dictionary, its vocabulary consists of collected News fragments, reconstructed almost fictional moments, and re-written rumors. I tried to understand these recent, incredible years over and over again. As if our vulnerability as individuals and as a collective has been fully exposed, as if this vulnerability is the foundation of everything, the real infrastructure of society. I want to know what happens if we build things on top of vulnerability, or use it to build things. Build something that may be sustainable, that may collapse at any time, or that will never collapse.
Muxi Gao is an artist and designer who has lived and worked in Beijing since Covid-19. Recent Studies is a three-or four-year program that runs through her studies in the United States and her subsequent move back home. She observed, collected, and responded to fragments of the world since Trump’s election to the outbreak of the global epidemic. The famous British artist Paul Elliman generously contributed four extremely beautiful pieces to the project during the isolation in London. Recent Studies was originally written in English and submitted as part of a graduate dissertation at Yale University’s School of the arts, and later translated into Chinese. The second edition of the book, with many support from family and friends, was able to be published in Beijing in 2020.
