Thickness of Time by Jinjoon Lee is a set of images created by repurposing footage from the motion-picture work Nowhere in Somewhere (2017) and presenting them in the form of images within an art book. The original motion-picture was a collection of footage taken from areas that have fallen prey to major natural disasters, with aesthetic elements, the artwork’s composition inspired by works of classical painting and Noh stage scene. The artist presents seemingly tranquil, mundane images of scenery that masks the chaos and uneasiness. Through these overlapping meanings behind the images, the artist takes the audience on an exploration of the ambiguity of history, collective memory, and the public’s obliviousness towards tragic events, the divide between the public and the personal, the harmony and antagony between the past and present, and the relationship between man and nature.
