We Have Found in the Ashes What We Have Lost in the Fire presents a collection of photographs that resemble a visual journal of the artist’s own travels to Bashiqa, a town North East of the capital city of Mosul, which is currently embroiled in a border dispute between the governments of Iraq and Kurdistan. The artist visited the town towards the end of 2016, just a few months after ‘Peshmerga’ liberated its people from the oppressive rule of ISIS, which has occupied the territory since 2014. With a majority of the territory’s population being either Christian or Yazidis, the two years spent under ISIS occupation has been nothing less than a living nightmare for the people of Bashiqa, who suffered through killings, forced migration, to the invaders’ unceasing efforts to wipe out the region’s original faiths.
Rushdi Anwar was born in Kurdistan, though he currently resides in the Chiang Mai province of Thailand. His works aim to shine a light on the on-going conflicts between the societies and politics within Kurdistan, Iraq, and the Middle-Eastern region in general, through his own experiences and memories.
